Educational approach
The Ciudad Real Medical School offers a Medicine Degree fully aligned with the European Higher Education system, student-focused, and based on skill acquisition.
The competency-based learning approach is a dynamic combination of knowledge (know); intellectual, social, and procedural skills (know-how); and attitudes and values (know how to be). It equips students with problem-solving capabilities and enables them to perform at the highest level in academic, professional, and social settings.
Main features of our educational methodology
- Focus on the acquisition of the professional, clinical, and social competencies required to excel in the professional practice of medicine.
- Student-based learning in small-sized groups (25–30).
- Active participation of students and interaction with the medical education team throughout the learning process.
- Encourage the development of logical reasoning, self-learning, and self-assessment skills.
- Reinforce learning through practical involvement in laboratories, dissecting rooms, clinical skills and simulation labs, and clinical practices in hospital facilities.
- Focus on problem-based learning to assess clinical cases.
- Multidisciplinary learning approach, integrating basic, clinical, and psycho-social sciences.
- Continuous assessment of students, academic staff, and the educational approach.
Learning is organized in goal-oriented modules
- The first semester is divided into three-week modules for Year 1 and 2, and four-week modules from Year 3.
- Goals and themes within each module are organized into different subjects and thematic units
- The themes and different subjects within each module are coordinated to avoid overlapping.
- The main aim of each module is for the student to achieve the goals set out
- Each goal-oriented module contains five working stages:
- Stage 1 or theoretical stage: The lecturer explains the module's objectives and delivers academic lectures, focusing on the key or more complex concepts.

Stage 2: Period of student self-learning, with practical or clinical skills workshops under the supervision of lecturers. Stage 3: Seminars and discussion of knowledge acquired in previous stages for each goal, with lecturers correcting and clarifying misunderstandings and complex concepts.
- Stage 4: Hands-on practices in laboratories, IT rooms, or clinical rotations at the hospital.
- Stage 5: Comprehensive assessment of all the subjects covered in the module, as part of the continuous assessment procedure that is an integral component of the educational program.
