General Information

Ph.D. Program in Economy and Business (Verified according to R.D. 99/2011): Training doctors entails instructing and preparing researchers that will become the future agents of development, innovation, creation, and teaching. Doctoral training makes the difference between the acquisition of notions and skills, and the generation of knowledge.

The University of Castilla-La Mancha offers undergraduate degrees in Economy and Business Administration and official master’s degree programs in these disciplines, which are taught at the different UCLM campuses. is we pool our instructors’ teaching and research experience on a single initiative aimed to generate excellent professionals in the highest level of knowledge of our respective research lines. (Doctorado en Economía y Administración de Empresas, DEcoAde) in the Ph.D. Program in Economics and Business does not have specific installations that can be offered to their students. Likewise, the program's training activities do not include the regular delivery of mandatory face-to-face training courses but face-to-face activities/workshops with on-line support instead. At the same time, the EID-UCLM develops courses and activities common to all the Ph.D. programs. To reach this objective the physical presence of the students on the campuses is not required. Furthermore, the Ph.D. Program does not imply the reception of any scholarship, financial aid or stipend.

At its meeting of April 21, 2016, the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program in Economics and Business approved an internal regulation on the maximum number of theses to be simultaneously supervised by a professor in the program: the maximum will be three unless at least one of them is co-supervised or a part-time student, in which case the maximum will be four.

Complementary training activities

CROSS-CUTTING TRAINING ACTIVITIES ORGANIZED BY THE INTERNATIONAL DOCTORAL SCHOOL

The International Doctoral School (EID-UCLM) organizes cross-disciplinary training courses with the aim of offering the doctorate students’ complementary training activities to his or her activity as a researcher. Activity

Description

PREPARATION AND PRESENTATION OF FOLLOW-UP RESEARCH RESULTS SEMINARS

Preparation and presentation of advances of results in the elaboration of different theoretical and/or empirical chapters of the doctoral thesis, such as the Doctoral Conferences of the University of Castilla-La Mancha, organized annually, and directed, among others, to students enrolled in doctoral studies at the University of Castilla-La Mancha.

PREPARATION FOR, ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION IN CONGRESSES, WORKSHOPS AND OTHER SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH MEETINGS.

Preparation, attendance, and presentation of papers in Congresses, Workshops and Scientific Research Meetings. Specifically, events of this type are considered especially valued for their link to the research lines of the program. Likewise, attendance at international congresses related to the lines of research of the Doctoral Program will be encouraged and valued.

MOBILITY AND RESEARCH STAYS AT OTHER UNIVERSITIES AND NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH CENTERS.

The Academic Committee will value as a training activity the realization by doctoral students, on a non-mandatory basis, of research stays in other universities and national and international research centers. The stay must be tutored at the university or center of destination by a professor or professors specifically linked to the area in which the line of research of the doctoral thesis is developed. The minimum duration will be one month. For an "International Doctorate" Mention, accreditation of three months of stay will be needed.

SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS.

Students are warmly advised to try to get at least one publication from their theses, preferably in an indexed scientific journal. In theses by article compendium at least three articles in indexed academic journals will be required.

 

There will be several types of training activities. All of them will be documented (and accredited) in RAPI online platform:  

COMPULSORY TRAINING ACTIVITIES

  • PREPARATION AND PRESENTATION OF FOLLOW-UP RESEARCH RESULTS SEMINARS ORGANIZED BY UCLM (at least once along the PhD training period).
  • PREPARATION AND PRESENTATION OF FOLLOW-UP RESEARCH RESULTS SEMINARS ORGANIZED BY INSTITUTIONS DIFFERENT FROM UCLM (at least once along the PhD training period).


NON-COMPULSORY TRAINING ACTIVITIES

  • RESEARCH VISITS.
  • COURSES AND SEMINARS.
  • SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS (except in theses by article compendium, where at least three articles in indexed academic journals will be required).
Access and admision

Access Requirements

The minimum legal access requirements for admission to any type of doctoral programs are specified in the Section "Access for new doctoral students" at the Escuela internacional de Doctorado - EID's website.

Admission Criteria

Likewise, the Doctoral Program in Economics and Business (DecoAde) contemplates the following admission criteria:

The recommended profile for admission to the Doctoral Program is that of students with undergraduate and postgraduate degrees (priority given to students with an academic or research profile) in the fields of Economics and Business Administration and Management, with the intention of developing the necessary skills to produce original research work at the doctoral thesis level in these fields. Among others, previous postgraduate studies in specific fields such as Economics (Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, International Economics and Sectorial Economics), Quantitative Methods, Banking and Finance, Business Management and Marketing will be especially valued.

Where appropriate, students with undergraduate and graduate degrees who present the following profiles may be considered for admission, with the additional completion of training complements and conditional to availability of vacant places:

  • Students with undergraduate and graduate degrees, with a professional profile, in the fields of Economics and Business.
  • Students with undergraduate and graduate degrees in other Social Sciences. Students with undergraduate and graduate degrees in Engineering, Physics and Maths.

Applicants who meet the general access requirements established in the R.D.99/2011, will be assessed by the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program considering the number of available places and the following specific selection criteria:

  • Applicant's academic record: considering certification of grades obtained in bachelor's and master's Degree studies or equivalent studies.
  • Motivation expressed in a letter of interest in pursuing the Doctoral Program and the subject/matter where the candidate would like to carry out his/her research activity. This letter will be used by the Academic Committee to assess the academic and scientific interest of the topic the candidate is proposing. It is  not compulsory that the letter will be signed by one member of the faculty in the PhD program. Please find below in the section about supervisors/faculty the lists of professors who are offering their research experience to supervise theses. Not all of them might be available at the moment of being contacted.
  • Subjects taken related to quantitative analysis techniques applied to the Social Sciences.
  • Accredited level of knowledge in English (B1 or higher).
  • Previous research activity (academic publications and participation in research projects and scientific conferences).
  • Other merits (Additional training, professional experience, awards, etc.).

In addition, the academic committee may ask the candidate for an interview, if convenient. Once the candidacies have been assessed, the academic commission will propose the admission of Phd candidates taking into account the number of available places. In the case of candidates who do differ from the recommended profile the admission will be conditioned to the completion of complementary training.

The relative importance of the various criteria considered by the Academic Committee to assess admission to the Program will be weighted as follows:

  • Academic records: 35 % (bachelor's degree 15%, master's degree 20%).
  • Adequacy of the proposed research topic to the Program: 20 %
  • Subjects taken related to quantitative analysis techniques applied to Social Sciences: 15 %
  • Level of accredited knowledge in English language: 10 %
  • Previous research experience: 15 %
  • Other merits: 5 %
Specific procedures of the PhD program

RULES FOR THE SUBMISSION OF THESES BY ARTICLE COMPENDIUM

According to the regulations of the International Doctoral School (EID) of the UCLM on the basic requirements for the development of doctoral thesis by compendium of articles, which can be consulted at this link, it is established that "Each Academic Committee may establish its own (...), which will be announced on their respective websites, always respecting a number of basic requirements, among which are (among others, which can be consulted in the link above) the following:

  • At least 3 articles published or accepted for publication on the date of application for admission of the doctoral thesis must be included.
  • They must be from indexed to scientific journals.

Given that the term "indexed scientific journals" may be too broad in certain cases, the Academic Committee of the DEcoADE Program agrees to specify it in the following terms:

  • They must be journals that have, at least, the consideration of "Journal" in the Scimago Journal & Country Rank (SJR) (see http://www.scimagojr.com/).
    This list can also be consulted in the Integrated Classification of Scientific Journals (CIRC) of the University of Granada, which includes them in GROUP B2 (see
    http://clasificacioncirc.es/clasificacion-circ).
  • In addition, one of these three articles must correspond to the journals included in the Journal of Citation Reports (JCR) (see http://sauwok5.fecyt.es/admin-apps/JCR/JCR).
    In other words, it must be included, at least, in Group B1 of the CIRC Classification, which corresponds to the Journals indexed in JCR in the fourth quartile.


IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT REGULATIONS

Quality

In each doctoral program, a Quality Assurance Committee will be formed, composed of the program coordinator, researchers, a doctoral student and a member of the administrative staff, as well as (optionally) a representative of entities with which a collaboration agreement has been established. This committee will meet at least twice a year and will have, among others, the following functions:

  • Analyze the results of the procedures that make up the SGICPD.
  • To prepare the Annual Improvement Plan and the Annual Program Monitoring Report.
  • To submit the above documents to the Steering Committee of the International Doctoral School for approval.
